About the MD/PhD Program

Due to the growing interlocking between medical research and other life sciences, the University of Heidelbergs set up the MD/PhD Program.

This program ist carried out by a mutual agreement between the Medical Faculty and the Faculty of Biosciences at the University of Heidelberg and is aimed for particularly talented students of medicine and dentistry from the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg, who have passed section 1 of the medical examination or the preliminary examination in dentistry, and are deeply interested in science. The program enables them to pursue further training in the field of biological-natural sciences and, by that, to prepare for a career in medical research, where research shall comprise all forms of investigative research into causes, development and progression of illnesses and academic debate concerning their prevention, recognition and treatment including patient-orientated clinical research. The number of students admitted to the MD/PhD Program is limited to yearly six at the most.

The MD/PhD Program includes teaching and research options from both faculties and is based on their doctoral regulations. It culminates in the awarding of the german doctoral degrees of Doctor of Medicine (Dr. med.) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (Dr. med. dent.) by the Faculty of Medicine, and the doctoral degree of Doctor of Natural Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.) by the joint Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. All participants to the MD/PhD Program are granted access to the Hartmut Hoffmann-Berling International Graduate School of "Molecular and Cellular Biology" Heidelberg (HBIGS).

The MD/PhD Programme is subdivided into three successive sections: (a) a perdiod of preparatory scientific study, which is to be completed in tandem with the study of human/dental medicine; (b) a period of experimental research activity culminating in the conferral of the german doctoral title of Doctor of Medicine (Dr. med.) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (; (c) and subsequently a period of experimental research activity culminating in the conferral of the german doctoral title of Doctor of Natural Sciences (Dr.rer.nat.).

The modalities of the MD/PhD Program including the selection procedure, the range of teaching and accompanying tutoring are arranged by mandatory regulations set by the faculties involved.

The administrative support of the MD/PhD Program is carried out by the Dean's Office for Research of the Faculty of Medicine, Im Neuenheimer Feld 672, 69120 Heidelberg,  Dr. Birgit Borgards, Tel. 06221/56-22711; Dr. Johannes Hadersdorfer, Tel. 06221/56-6825. It includes, amongst others, the application and selection procedures as well as the financial administration.
