Progress in maternal and perinatal health: In search for the magic fix.

Claudia Hanson

Maternal Health has been on the international agenda since the 1980s.  The coining of the MDG goal of reducing maternal mortality by 75% and the ambitious SDG goal aiming at a reduction of mortality levels below 70 deaths per 100,000 live births draws continuously attention to maternal health. However, little reduction in seen in the poorest countries in the world: the latest estimate proposes that in 2017 about 295 000 women died in pregnancy and childbirth, down from 451 000 in 2000, thus only a reduction of 35%. Why is it so difficult to reduce the number of maternal deaths? What are the options in prevention, care and emergency response that have been put forward? What have we learned from failures, and what are the key ideas at present? We will review and discuss with a focus of learning from the past to better prepare for the future.
