Career Development Day 2026

Fostering Exchange, Networking and Career Development

The Heidelberg Faculty of Medicine recently welcomed 46 fellows to its annual Career Development Day, bringing together participants from the Faculty's Clinician Scientist, Medical Scientist, Medical Data Scientist, Olympia Morata, and Rahel Goitein-Straus programs as well as Advanced Clinician Scientist and Advanced Medical Scientist programs. The event provides an opportunity for fellows to exchange scientific ideas, expand their professional networks, and gain valuable insights for their future careers.

The day opened with a welcome address by Vice Dean for Research Prof. Dr. Rohini Kuner, who encouraged fellows to make the most of the Career Development Programs by building lasting professional networks, learning from one another through mentoring, and taking advantage of the contacts beyond the funded period.

The program featured an overview of funding opportunities for postdoctoral researchers presented by the Dean's Office for Research, as well as Flash Talk Presentations from fellows selected in the 2025 funding calls. Scientific talks by more advanced fellows showcased the breadth and excellence of research within the programs, while a poster session created additional opportunities for discussion and networking. The sessions were moderated by the program speakers, who also highlighted plans to further strengthen networking activities among fellows.

Participants also learned about key research infrastructures available at the Campus Heidelberg. Dr. Andrea Leibfried introduced the CCTP-associated Core Facilities, while Dr. Stefanie Mellein and Dr. Sabrina Lewis presented the Expression & Spatial Profiling Core Facility and its platforms. The event was complemented by inspiring Role Model Talks by PD Dr. med. Laura Michel (Department of Internal Medicine VI) and Dr. Frauke Mücksch (Center for Integrative Infectious Disease Research), who shared insights into their individual academic career paths.

The Career Development Day once again highlighted the Faculty's commitment to supporting early-career researchers by fostering interdisciplinary exchange, mentorship, and collaboration across its programs.
