Recognition of academic achievements in human medicine for dentistry:
Changes for the summer semester 2026!
- In future, a licence to practise medicine will no longer be sufficient to have academic achievements from a degree course in human medicine automatically recognised in accordance with Section 20 (4) or Sections 29 (2) and 59 (2) ZApprO.
- There is an obligation to recognise credits from a degree course in human medicine abroad
- Before enrolment, the application for recognition of foreign study achievements must be submitted either to the North Rhine-Westphalia State Examination Office (if the student was born abroad) or to the State Examination Office responsible for the respective place of birth in Germany.

- For the recognition of academic achievements from a degree programme in human medicine in accordance with § 20 Para. 4 or §§ 29 Para. 2 and 59 Para. 2 ZApprO, the following evidence is therefore required:
- Certificate of having passed the M1 examination or
- Certificate of having passed the medical examination ("Ärztliche Prüfung")
- Certificate of crediting of the fully credited M1 examination by a German state examination office or certificate of crediting of individual certificates of achievement by a German state examination office
Application for the 1st semester
Medicine and dentistry are centrally allocated degree programmes. Germans, German nationals and EU foreigners apply for the selection quotas: "Abiturbesten", "Zusätzliche Eignungsquote (ZEQ)" and "Auswahlverfahren der Hochschule (AdH)" at the Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung (hochschulstart.de).
Non-EU foreigners apply directly to Heidelberg University via the online portal for prospective international students.
Application for higher semesters
Applications for a higher semester, e.g. via transfer, exchange or lateral entry, are made directly to the Central University Administration (ZUV) of Heidelberg University.
