Application for higher semesters

Recognition of academic achievements in human medicine for dentistry:

Changes for the summer semester 2026!

  • In future, a licence to practise medicine will no longer be sufficient to have academic achievements from a degree course in human medicine automatically recognised in accordance with Section 20 (4) or Sections 29 (2) and 59 (2) ZApprO.

  • There is an obligation to recognise credits from a degree course in human medicine abroad
    • Before enrolment, the application for recognition of foreign study achievements must be submitted either to the North Rhine-Westphalia State Examination Office (if the student was born abroad) or to the State Examination Office responsible for the respective place of birth in Germany.

  • For the recognition of academic achievements from a degree programme in human medicine in accordance with § 20 Para. 4 or §§ 29 Para. 2 and 59 Para. 2 ZApprO, the following evidence is therefore required:
    • Certificate of successful completion of the M1 examination or
    • Certificate of having passed the medical examination ("Ärztliche Prüfung")
    • Certificate of crediting of the fully credited M1 examination by a German state examination office or certificate of crediting of individual certificates of achievement by a German state examination office

Applications for a higher semester, e.g. via transfer, exchange or lateral entry, are made directly to the University Administration/Students' Registration Office at Heidelberg University. In the winter semester, it is only possible to apply for odd-numbered semesters, in the summer semester only for even-numbered semesters.

  • An exchange in the 1st semester is not possible.
  • Minimum requirement for an exchange to Preclinical II / phantom year (FS5, new licence to practise): Proof of passing the first section of the dental examination (Z1).
  • Minimum requirement for an exchange to the 1st clinical semester (FS7, new licence to practise): Proof of passing the second section of the dental examination (Z2).
  • Minimum requirement for lateral entry: Proof of achievements from another degree programme that have already been recognised by the State Examination Office, as well as proof of subject-specific study counselling.
