Structure of the study programme
The dental training programme comprises a dental medicine course of 5000 hours, which is structured as follows:
- Pre-clinical Study SectionI: semesters 1 to 4
Completion of the Z1 examination
- Pre-clinical Study Section II: semesters 5 and 6
Taking the Z2 examination
- Clinical Study Section: semesters 7 to 10
Taking the Z3 examination
Each study section is concluded with a partial examination (Z examinations).
In addition:
- Training in first aid
- 1-month nursing service
- Clinical traineeship of four weeks
This results in a regular study period of five years and six months (11 semesters).
Proof of first aid training must be provided by the time you register for the first partof the dental examination (Z1).
The nursing service must be completed before the start of the degree programme or during the lecture-free period between the first four semesters. Proof of the nursing service must also be provided when registering for the first part of the dental examination (Z1).
The clinical traineeship must be completed with a dentist in Germany or abroad during the lecture-free period after passing the first section of the dental examination. Proof of the clinical traineeship must be provided when registering for the third part of the dental examination.
STUDY CONTENT
Preclinical Study Section I
Semesters 1 to 4:
- Scientific basics (anatomy, physics, chemistry, histology, biochemistry and physiology)
- Medical terminology
- Dentistry basics (occupational field exploration, haptic VR training)
- Semester 4: Start of practical dental training with the two propaedeutic courses Dental Technologies and Preventive Dentistry
- Pre-clinical electives
The Pre-clinical Study Section I is completed with the first part of the dental examination (Z1).
Pre-clinical Study Section I
Semesters 5 to 6:
- In preparation for patient treatment in the clinical study section, training on the phantom takes place in semesters 5 and 6. Treatment simulations on phantom heads/simulation patients therefore take place in the following courses:
- Practical course in dental conservation on the phantom,
- Practical course in dental prosthetics on the phantom - In addition, interdisciplinary courses with orthodontic and dental-surgical content take place.

- Pharmacology
- Radiology
- Hygiene, microbiology, virology
- Scientific work (biometrics)
The Pre-clinical Study Section II is completed with the second part of the dental examination (Z2).
Clinical Study Section
Semesters 7 to 10:
- In the clinical study section, further competences in all sub-disciplines of dentistry are developed, deepened and expanded.
- The separation of subjects is cancelled. Students complete practical training on patients in the interdisciplinary integrated treatment courses. In these courses, students work directly on patients in a diagnostic and therapeutic capacity. This includes measures for tooth preservation and dental prosthetics.
- Surgical procedures are carried out in the surgery courses I and II and orthodontic treatments in the practical courses in orthodontic diagnostics and therapy I and II.
- Dental decision-making is practised during the practical course in dental diagnostics and therapy.
- Other cross-sectional areas supplement the dental expertise:
- Ethics and history of medicine and dentistry
- Health sciences with a focus on epidemiology, prevention, health promotion, public health care, health economics and ethics
- Clinical materials science
- Medicine and dentistry of ageing and the elderly
