Foundations
Funding is also provided by numerous foundations. The foundations use various funding instruments to promote research activities, in some cases in specific subject areas. The financial resources of the foundations also vary considerably. Some of the foundations are organized in the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft(www.stifterverband.de), while others - mostly smaller or locally funded foundations - are managed by law firms or tax consultants. Only a few foundations are therefore listed below to illustrate these differences. Further information on the funding program of the foundations listed can be found at their respective websites.
Baden-Württemberg Foundation
The state of Baden-Württemberg is the sole shareholder of the Baden-Württemberg Foundation, which is organized in the legal form of a non-profit limited liability company (gGmbH).
The Baden-Württemberg Foundation provides targeted funding in the areas of research, education, society and culture.
As a general rule, all projects funded by the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung must have a connection to Baden-Württemberg. This stipulation can be fulfilled, for example, if the projects are carried out in Baden-Württemberg, if Baden-Württemberg institutions are involved in them or if the topic is of particular interest to the state.
Please note that applications to the Baden-Württemberg Foundation must always be submitted via the faculty and the university management (Rectorate). Applications should therefore be submitted to the Dean’s Office for Research at the Medical Faculty as early as possible; please note the internal submission deadlines.
The Elite Program for Postdoctoral Researchers is regularly advertised. The program is aimed specifically at outstanding young scientists who are pursuing a career as a university lecturer and wish to carry out their research project at a university in Baden-Württemberg. Projects from the field of medicine can only be funded if they can be categorized as basic research.
If you have any questions about the Baden-Württemberg Foundation's programs or calls for proposals, please contact Dr. Johannes Hadersdorfer.
German Cancer Aid
German Cancer Aid supports projects in the field of cancer research/oncology with the aim of improving prevention, early detection, diagnosis, therapy, medical follow-up care and psychosocial care, including cancer self-help.
Dietmar Hopp Foundation
If you have any questions about applying to the Dietmar Hopp Foundation, please contact Dr Birgit Borgards.
Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation (EKFS)
If you have any questions about programmes or calls for proposals from the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation, please contact Dr. Tanja Heimberger.
Volkswagen Foundation
The Volkswagen Foundation focusses its funding on a manageable number of funding initiatives (currently 16). With these initiatives it aims to provide effective impetus and establish forward-looking topics. They are grouped into four areas: "Structural and personalized funding", "Internationally oriented initiatives", "Thematic impulses" and "Social and cultural challenges". Individual funding is only possible in exceptional cases ("Open for the extraordinary").
