Equal opportunities
Appointed female professors at the Medical Faculty
The team of equal opportunity officers is very proud to introduce the outstanding female professors at our faculty here in more detail. The professors were asked to reflect upon personal and gender-equality-related aspects of their careers that they have experienced, and which they would like to pass on as advice to younger female scientists and physicians. According to the Landeshochschulgesetz (LHG, “State Higher Education Act”) , the universities support the implementation of equal opportunities for women and men in academia and work towards the elimination of existing disadvantages; they actively seek to increase the proportion of women in all subjects and at all levels in which they are underrepresented and ensure a better balance between family and academic and medical activities. Gender-specific effects must be taken into account in all tasks and decisions. Accordingly, the University Equal Opportunities Officer supports the university management in enforcing the constitutionally required equal opportunities for women and men and in eliminating any existing disadvantages for women in academia and for female students.
The University Equal Opportunities Officer is represented in the faculties by the Faculty Equal Opportunities Officers appointed by the Faculty Council.
The Medical Faculty Heidelberg is committed to the equal opportunities concept of Heidelberg University. In addition to concrete measures, activities and initiatives, this concept formulates various instruments and responsibilities for the implementation of equal opportunities. This includes individual advancement measures and support for career planning as well as measures in cooperation with the University Hospital to ensure the compatibility of career and family. In addition, fields of action are also identified at an institutional level, such as the equal participation of women in appointments and their involvement in committees and commissions.
The Equal Opportunities Officers work closely with the University Equal Opportunities Officer, the Dean's Office of the Medical Faculty Heidelberg, the Human Resources Development Department of the University Hospital, the Equal Opportunities Officers at the University Hospital (responsible for non-scientific employees), the staff councils of the University Hospital and the University, and support women in discussions and in finding solutions with decision-makers at the Faculty and the University Hospital.
The faculty's equal opportunities concept includes the following areas of responsibility:

- Increasing the visibility of female scientists / doctors
- Continuation and adaptation of support programs

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAMS
The Medical Faculty Heidelberg considers it an important task to actively support female doctors and scientists on their path from doctorate to habilitation and professorship and thus to support a more predictable career development in university medicine.
As part of the Faculty's equal opportunities concept and the overarching strategy of "Protected Time", a series of measures have been established at all levels of the academic career. The common feature of these measures is that time off from clinical duties is promoted in favor of independent research activities. This helps to overcome structural hurdles and improve the prospects of women in university medicine.
You can find more information on the various equality measures of the Medical Faculty Heidelberg at the Gender Equality Measures Program.
Protected Time

As part of the Medical Faculty's Career Development Program, there are funding programs for women that are intended to create scope for their own research on the way to a management position in university medicine.
Details (deadlines, application guidelines, etc.) on the individual programs can be found in the corresponding links (see below). The programs are assessed three times a year by the faculty's "Commission for Equal Opportunities Programs", whose members are happy to provide advice.
Extracurricular support programmes
In addition to gender-independent career development programs at the university, there are also programs specifically for women offered by the state of Baden-Württemberg, the University Hospital and Heidelberg University, which are summarised in the following overview.
