Career Development Programme Course and further training programme

Participants of all funding programmes of the Career Development Programme of the Faculty of Medicine can apply for the courses on offer.

Presenting your research in English, if it's not your mother tongue, makes it even more difficult to concentrate on everything at once: What facts do I want to deliver? Is my language, grammar and pronunciation correct (enough)? And then how do I move in the room? What do I actually do to hold the audience's attention?

In this workshop we will be experimenting, in English, with various performance techniques (many adapted from professional stage performers) for engaging your audience by using your voice and body language more effectively and dynamically; we will also look at ways of overcoming typical English articulation and pronunciation challenges for non-native speakers.

Date: 30.04.2025,
Presenter: Andy Laycock
Place: Marsilius Arakaden, Tower South, Room K13 (Im Neuenheimer Feld 130)

The quantitative measurability of scientific publication performance continues to play an important role for careers in science, especially in medicine. The lecture presents the most common key figures and their calculation in the relevant databases, highlights the significance of such metrics and presents alternatives.

Date: 04.04.2025, 14:00 - 15:30
Lecturer: Dr Georg Schwesinger
Location: Marsilius Arkaden, Tower West, Room K4 (Im Neuenheimer Feld 130)

As a researcher, you analyse texts and various materials to gain new insights; you use images and videos to communicate content and publish your research findings. What do you need to consider in terms of copyright? This course, which deals in particular with the copyright regulations relevant to the education and science sector (UrhWissG), aims to introduce the basic principles of copyright law relevant to science and research and provide an initial orientation.

Date: 19.05.2025 - 10.00-12.00
Lecturer: Ulrike Fälsch, LL.M.
Location: Marsilius Arkaden, Turm Süd, Room K15 (Im Neuenheimer Feld 130)

Verifiability and reproducibility of knowledge are essential cornerstones of the scientific method. But how open can and must research be in practice? The lecture aims to provide a cross-disciplinary introduction to the topic of Open Science with its various facets such as Open Access, FAIR principles and research data management.

Date: 23.05.2025 13:00-14:30
Lecturer: Sebastian Zangerle, Christoph Otte
Location: Marsilius Arkaden, Turm West, Room K9 (Im Neuenheimer Feld 130)

Correct citation and the avoidance of plagiarism are basic principles of academic work. However, while the unmarked copying of third-party texts and illustrations is an obvious misconduct (and relatively rare), the handling of extensive citations and general scientific knowledge as well as the reuse of own texts remain challenging even for advanced scientists. Using case studies, the course will discuss the principles of citation and present ways of avoiding plagiarism. The course also includes a test of the plagiarism detection software turnitin, which is licensed by Heidelberg University.

Date: 24.09.2025, 10:00-13:00
Lecturer: Dr Martin Nissen
Location: Marsilius Arkaden, Tower South, Room K15 (Im Neuenheimer Feld 130)
