European Research Funding
EU research framework programs have been in existence since 1984 and have grown considerably in terms of time and funding since then. Horizon 2020, the framework program that has been running since 2014, is the world's largest funding program for research and innovation. Around 80 billion euros will be available over the seven-year period (2014-2020). The aim of Horizon 2020 is to create sustainable growth and future-proof jobs in Europe and thus strengthen Europe's competitiveness.
In contrast to previous framework programs, Horizon 2020 is not "just" a research framework program. In addition to research, it also places a strong focus on innovation. This is a consistent further development of the growing importance that innovation already had in previous framework programs.
In this sense, Horizon 2020 funds projects that cover the entire innovation chain - from basic research to the preparation of marketable products and services. Universities, research institutions, companies (especially small and medium-sized enterprises) and other stakeholders involved in the development of innovation are the program's target groups.

From then on, a physical factor must be used in addition to one’s password to log in to the portal.
Association of the United Kingdom with Horizon Europe
The EU and the UK have agreed to the UK's association with Horizon Europe. This officially came into force on January 1st, 2024. The following regulations regarding the involvement of British partners must be observed:
- For calls containing the call identifier 2023, the previous regulations apply unchanged: British institutions participate as Beneficiaries in the application, but are listed as Associated Partner from the preparation of the Grant Agreement and receive their funding via the guarantee commitment of the British government.
- For calls with call identifier 2024, the general rules for Associated Countries apply. UK organizations can therefore participate fully in further Horizon Europe calls, including as coordinators.
Both regulations apply exclusively on the basis of the call identifier. The deadline of the call is irrelevant in this context.

On December 15th, 2022, the Council of the European Union adopted measures to protect the Union budget against violations of the principles of the rule of law in Hungary.
