Institute for Computational Biomedicine

In the Institute for Computational Biomedicine we develop and apply computational methods to analyze complex biomedical data. Our goal is to acquire a functional understanding of molecular mechanisms in health and disease. We apply these insights to improve diagnosis and to develop novel therapeutics that we apply across diverse disease areas, including oncology, cardiology, nephrology, neurology, and infectious diseases.

We work closely with experimental and clinical groups within Heidelberg University’s Medical Faculty and University Hospital, as well as national and international collaborators. We are connected with the EMBL via the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit on Chronic Kidney Disease (Saez-Rodriguez group), and we are also part of ELLIS, the European initiative for Artificial Intelligence, and diverse consortia including HiGHmed (Schapiro group) and SMART-Care (Lu and Saez-Rodriguez).

A key emphasis is to build models that are both mechanistic (to provide understanding) and predictive (to generate novel hypotheses), using methods from statistics, machine learning, and engineering. To build these models, we combine existing biological knowledge with large-scale molecular data, in particular genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics, obtained from patients or appropriate model systems.

We are dedicated to open science so all our computational tools are open-source which we share freely with the scientific community, and we support scientific crowdsourcing, specifically collaborative competitions, through the DREAM challenges.

There are three groups in the institute:
Saez-Rodriguez group -  www.saezlab.org
Schapiro group  - www.schapirolab.com
Lu group - www.lu-group-ukhd.github.io/

We are located on the 10th floor of the Marsilius Arkaden, Turm West, in the Im Neuenheimer Feld campus : https://www.openstreetmap.org/search?query=Im%20Neuenheimer%20Feld%20130.3

We always welcome enquiries to discuss synergies and collaborations.
