Program

The Advanced Medical Scientist Program of the Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University is a module of structured career support for oustanding, experienced natural scientists and non-clinically active physicians (Senior Scientists). The program aims to offer excellent, scientifically proven natural scientists and non-clinically active physicians financially secured research time and development space to set up their own working group. An accompanying individual qualification program with a focus on sharpening leadership skills is planned. Admission to the program is based on a competitive and transparent selection process.

Format

The program comprises a three-year protected research period, during which a specific research project that is rated as very good by the selection committee is to be worked on. The program is accompanied by a mandatory mentoring program in which each Advanced Medical Scientist should identify two mentors.

The program provides for an accompanying qualification program that takes into account the individual needs of the participants and teaches key skills for later leadership positions (e.g. communication techniques, conflict management, etc.).

Scope of funding

Within the three-year participation in the program, the Heidelberg Medical Faculty finances a maximum of three years of a 50% position (protected research time), the second half of the position is to be financed by the respective clinic/institute.

In addition, the Faculty of Medicine finances 65% of a TV-L E13 position for a doctoral candidate or, equivalently, a pro rata position for a technical assistant in the same financial amount (depending on the requirements of the candidate or the project) as well as material resources of €15,000/year. The material budget can also be used for publication costs and travel expenses as well as fees for the use of the core facilities to an appropriate extent.
