Programme

The central aim of the Clinician Scientist Programme is to enable participating research physicians, clinical psychologists and dentists to successfully develop into scientific group leaders. The programme is aimed at doctors with a doctorate and those working in research during their specialist training who have above-average qualifications and would like to carry out a research project at Heidelberg University Hospital. Admission to the programme is based on a competitive and transparent selection process. An accompanying binding curriculum and mentoring programme is to be completed by the time the candidate reaches the specialist qualification. A certificate is awarded as a seal of approval for completion of the programme as a Heidelberg Clinician Scientist.

Format

The funding comprises a maximum of two years of full-time research work to be carried out over a period of three years in a research group based at the Heidelberg Medical Faculty. As part of the research activity, a specific research project that is categorised as very good by the selection committee should be carried out. The programme begins with at least one year of full-time research work. The following two years comprise a proportion of protected time in favour of the funded research activity and further clinical training. The research activities are funded by the Heidelberg Medical Faculty.

Scope of funding

  • Funding of the protected research time (full-time 100%) of the programme participants for two years by the Heidelberg Medical Faculty; a further year (clinical training) is funded by the host clinic
  • Dentists alternatively have the option of half of the position being funded for one year, while the second half of the position is provided by the host dental clinic ("GEROK position in dentistry")

Compulsory and elective modules totalling at least 30 half days must be completed and documented during the funding period.

Please refer to the curriculum for the specific requirements of the Clinician Scientist Programme. A selection of the currently available training events can be found in the annex to the curriculum, which is also linked here.
